The Mercantile/Government Services Chess Championship 2014, organized by Chess Federation of Sri Lanka was held from 25th to 28th July 2014 at National Institute of Sports Science. This year’s tournament was the most competitive tournament yet, featuring many strong national level players.
‘99X Technology – Strikers’ finished at 7th place after scoring 11.5 points, a 1 point improvement from the last year. ‘99X Technology – Blockers’ too fought hard to finished at very respectable 12th place.
After a very close fight, Sutra Technologies, a software company, managed to win the trophy by edging out heavyweight Dialog 1 with the slimmest possible margins. Mobitel grabbed the 2nd runner-up position thanks to some late striking.
Like in the previous years, the tournament was held as an individual tournament and added up individual scores of the players to decide the ranking of the teams. A team consisted of 5 players with a minimum of 1 female player.
This year’s tournament attracted 84 players from 22 different institutions. 99X Technology managed to send 2 teams and was one of the 3 companies to do so. Our teams were made up of the following people:
